Villagers at Work

Bring life to villager professions through automation

Vanilla villagers with professions trade but barely do any work. This mod gives twelve of the thirteen vanilla professions real jobs (three of them, the weaponsmith, fletcher and leatherworker, arm your guards when a guard mod such as MCA Reborn is installed) — and, more importantly, establishes supplier-customer relationships among them.

The result is a village that runs as a small economy.

Principles and Philosophy

Vanilla mechanics are still there:

  • The mechanics added are triggered by opt-in action.
  • The vanilla mechanics altered are restored by opt-out action.

The mod shall never break existing farms and shall be safe to install or uninstall on existing worlds.

No blocks are added. The mod adds no blocks. It just utilizes vanilla ones so it shall be pure server side. If any feature requires installation on the client, it shall be provided in a separate client part that the mod’s jar carries and only a player’s game loads, so a server never runs it and a player without it can still join.

The mod invents nothing. Villagers only make things they already trade, or things their workstation genuinely does. A blast furnace really smelts, so the armorer smelts. A cartographer really sells paper, so the cartographer makes paper. The mod is not giving villagers new powers — it is pointing existing ones at each other instead of at you.

The game teaches itself. You should never need this wiki from time to time to work out how to get something working. Once you get the main idea, visual feedback will guide you on what needs to be done or why something is not working.
